The recipe.

Low parent effort
5 things

What you need

  • Big plastic tub or bathtub
  • Water
  • Toy cars or trucks that can go in water
  • Squeezers or squirters, such as turkey basters
  • Cups, pitchers, or measuring cups for pouring
15 min minimum

Setup

Then start the loop
Step 01
On the floor, in a bathtub, or in another supervised washable spot, set down a big plastic tub where your child can reach inside easily.
Step 02
Inside the tub, pour in a shallow layer of water that covers the bottom and lets the cars get wet without turning the whole setup into a bath.
Step 03
Inside the tub, add a few toy cars plus a few cups, pitchers, or squirters, leaving open space in the middle for washing.
"Wash this one."
The loop

How play unfolds.

A three-panel sequence shows a child filling a cup, pouring water over a toy car, and reaching for the next car in the tub.
  1. 01
Wash one car yourself and say, "Let's wash the cars."
  2. 02
Let your child choose a car and fill a cup or squirter from the tub.
  3. 03
Have them pour or squirt the water over the car.
  4. 04
Put the car back, grab another car or tool, and repeat.

Safety Check

  • Stay close for the whole activity.
  • Keep the floor dry enough to avoid slips.
  • Keep squirters pointed away from faces and eyes.
  • Use toy cars that are large enough for the child who is playing.
  • If your child drinks from the cups, refill with clean water or switch back to pouring only.

What to say in the moment

Match what you say to what you see.

Prompt ladder
Level 1 (Start)
"This car needs a wash."
Level 2 (Keep going)
"Rinse the wheels."
Level 3 (Stretch)
"Pick a new tool."
Level 4 (Extend)
"Wash it, park it, grab another."
If your child seems...
What you'd see
Focused
What to do
Say
"You found another dirty spot."
Add
Name one part, such as roof or wheels.
Extend
Let your child choose the next tool.

Make it easier

Younger end
  • -Start with one car and one cup.
  • -Use a larger cup before offering a squirter.
  • -Keep the tools inside the tub so your child does not have to reach far.

Make it harder

Older end
  • +Wash one car, then switch tools for the next one.
  • +Rinse the wheels before the roof.
  • +Park each clean car on the same side of the tub before grabbing another one.

If it's not working

If you see
If child ignores it
Wash one car yourself, make the splash obvious, and hand your child the easiest cup or squirter.
If you see
If child misuses it
Pull the setup back to one car and one tool and say, "Water stays in the tub. Pour it on the car."
If you see
If child gets frustrated
Switch to the easiest cup, fill it once for your child, or hold the car steady while they do the wash.

Fill And Empty

Pouring and squirting with control

Repeated filling, tipping, and squeezing help with everyday tool use during meals, bath play, and simple helping jobs.

  • Filling and emptying cups or squirters gives real practice with simple tools.
  • The car gives the water a clear target, which makes pouring and squeezing easier to repeat.
  • The short wash loop helps your child restart the play without much talking.
Real-world transfer
  • Using cups, pitchers, and bath toys with more control
  • Helping pour or rinse during simple household routines
