The recipe.

Low parent effort
2 things

What you need

  • Toddler-safe toy bricks or blocks, enough for 1 low tower
  • Clear flat floor space or a low table
5 min minimum

Setup

Then start the loop
Step 01
On the floor or a low table, choose a flat tower spot with empty space around it.
Step 02
Beside the tower spot, place only the blocks you need for one small tower.
Step 03
Between you and your child, build 1 low tower together.
Step 04
Near the tower, sit close enough that your child can hear your voice before touching it.
"One tower."
The loop

How play unfolds.

Three-panel sequence showing a toddler building a block tower, waiting for ready steady go, and knocking it down.
  1. 01
    Finish one low tower together.
  2. 02
Hold still for a tiny pause and say, "Ready, steady..."
  3. 03
Say, "Go," and let your child knock the tower down.
  4. 04
Name the wait right away: "You waited for go."
  5. 05
Ask, "Another go?" and rebuild if your child wants another turn.

Safety Check

  • Use toddler-safe blocks that are intact, light, and too large to mouth.
  • Keep the tower low enough that falling blocks will not hit your child's face.
  • Keep breakables, hard obstacles, and extra loose blocks out of the fall area.
  • Pause and reset if your child throws blocks, climbs over the tower, or knocks in an unsafe way.

What to say in the moment

Level 1 (Start)
Build with me, then wait for go.
Level 2 (Keep going)
Ready, steady... go.
Level 3 (Stretch)
Your turn to wait for my go.
Level 4 (Extend)

What to do
Say
"Ready, steady..."
Add
Pause 1 quiet beat before saying "go."
Extend
Let your child choose a tiny knock, big knock, or slow knock.

Make it easier

Younger end
  • -Keep the pause under 1 second.
  • -Pair "go" with a clear hand sweep toward the tower.
  • -Let your child rest one hand beside the tower while waiting.

Make it harder

Older end
  • +Add 1 longer silent beat before "go."
  • +Let your child say "go" for you to knock down the tower.
  • +Ask your child to choose tiny, big, or slow before the cue.

If it's not working

If you see
If child ignores it
Build only 2 or 3 blocks, tap the tower, and make the first knockdown quick.
If you see
If child misuses it
Move extra blocks out of reach, say "blocks stay low," and reset to 1 small tower.
If you see
If child gets frustrated
Let your child knock once without waiting, then try one short "ready, go" round before stopping.

Pause Before Action

Waiting for go

This helps a child pause before acting when a parent gives a simple cue, like waiting to start, stop, or take a turn.

  • The tower gives your child a visible reason to pause before acting.
  • The "ready, steady, go" cue connects listening to one clear movement.
  • The crash and rebuild repeat the same rule without adding new instructions.
  • Letting your child call "go" later turns the same game into simple turn-taking practice.
Real-world transfer
  • Waiting before running, throwing, or grabbing
  • Listening for a parent's start or stop cue
  • Taking turns in simple games
  • Repeating a rule across several short rounds
