The loop

How play unfolds.

Four panels showing a toy placed into a zippered pouch, the pouch set in front of a toddler, the child opening the zipper, and the toy pulled out for the reveal.
  1. 01
Tap the pouch and say, "There's something inside. Can you open it?"
  2. 02
Let your child grab the pouch, open it, and reach inside.
  3. 03
Let your child pull the toy out and enjoy the reveal.
  4. 04
Put the same toy back in, zip the pouch, and start another short round.

Safety Check

  • Use only a toy that is too large to swallow.
  • Stop if the zipper has sharp edges, gets stuck easily, or pinches your child's fingers.
  • Stay close if your child mouths the pouch, the zipper, or the hidden toy.

What to do
Say
"You found the toy."
Add
Name the toy after your child pulls it out.
Extend
Let your child help tuck the toy back in before the next zip.

Make it easier

Younger end
  • -Use a pouch with a large easy zipper pull.
  • -Let the zipper stay slightly open for the first few rounds.
  • -Use a toy with a firm shape that is easy to grab.

Make it harder

Older end
  • +Let your child tuck the toy all the way back in before you zip it.
  • +Turn the pouch so your child has to find the zipper pull first.
  • +Pause before the reveal and wait a little longer before helping.

If it's not working

If you see
If child ignores it
Let a small part of the toy shape show through the pouch and do one very fast reveal.
If you see
If child misuses it
Hold the pouch steady, say "Open," and keep the round to one quick find.
If you see
If child gets frustrated
Start the zipper halfway, let your child finish the pull, and count that as the win.

Open And Close

Opening a simple container to get what is inside

This helps with everyday container jobs like opening a pouch, bag, or case to get something needed from inside, then staying with one short repeatable routine.

  • Opening the pouch gives your child one clear two-hand job with a visible payoff.
  • Finding the hidden toy lets your child practice staying with a short problem long enough to finish it.
  • Repeating the same reveal makes the activity easy to predict without feeling flat.
Real-world transfer
  • Opening small bags, pouches, or cases during daily routines
  • Sticking with a short hand-use task long enough to finish it
