The loop

How play unfolds.

A multi-panel sequence showing a small pile of clean clothes on the floor, a child loading them into a basket, the basket being tipped out, and the next round beginning.
  1. 01
Drop 1 clean clothing item into the basket and say, "In the basket. Your turn."
  2. 02
Let your child load 1 clothing item at a time until the basket has a small load.
  3. 03
Tip the basket or help your child tip it so the clothes spill back onto the floor.
  4. 04
Start the same load-and-empty turn again.

Safety Check

  • Stay close so your child does not climb into the basket.
  • Keep the basket light enough to tip safely.
  • Skip hangers, pins, or small clothing accessories in the play area.

What to do
Say
"You found another one."
Add
Name 1 clothing item after your child is already moving.
Extend
Pause before helping so your child can spot the next item first.

Make it easier

Younger end
  • -Use only 2 or 3 clothing items per round.
  • -Keep the basket right beside the clothing pile.
  • -Let the child do only the drop while you help with the dump.

Make it harder

Older end
  • +Spread the clothing items a little farther apart around the basket.
  • +Wait before pointing so your child finds the next item alone.
  • +Ask your child to carry 1 clothing item from you to the basket before dropping it in.

If it's not working

If you see
If child ignores it
Do 1 quick model turn, then hand your child the next clothing item.
If you see
If child misuses it
Hold the clothing pile yourself and offer 1 item at a time until the load-and-drop rule is clear again.
If you see
If child gets frustrated
Shrink the round to 2 or 3 clothing items, help with the dump, and stop after that success.

Fill And Empty

filling and emptying a container during a real household routine

This helps a child join a real home routine, understand what a container is for, and keep a simple action sequence going from start to reset.

  • The basket gives your child one clear target and one clear reset.
  • The routine is real, which can make helping feel easier to enter than a made-up game.
  • Fill, dump, and restart is a simple pattern many toddlers can follow with very little language.
Real-world transfer
  • Joining simple household helping jobs
  • Understanding how to load, empty, and reset containers during cleanup or routines
