The recipe.

Low parent effort
3 things

What you need

  • 3 or 4 clean, non-breakable jars or small containers in different sizes
  • their matching lids, with a mix of snap-on and twist-on closures
  • 1 tray
5 min minimum

Setup

Then start the loop
Step 01
On the floor or on a toddler-sized table, put 1 tray right in front of your child.
Step 02
On the tray, set 3 or 4 clean jars or containers with their matching lids already on.
Step 03
On the tray, leave space between the jars and mix snap-on and twist-on lids so your child can grab 1 at a time.
"Off, then back on."
The loop

How play unfolds.

A three-panel sequence shows a toddler opening a jar, testing the lid, and twisting it closed again.
  1. 01
Show 1 jar, open it once, and say, "This lid comes off and goes back on. Your turn."
  2. 02
Let your child open the jar, test the lid, and twist or snap it closed.
  3. 03
If the fit is off, help line it up or try the right jar, then repeat with another one.

Safety Check

  • Use clean, non-breakable containers without sharp edges.
  • Use lids too large to mouth, and stay close if your child still mouths or throws objects.

What to say in the moment

Match what you say to what you see.

Prompt ladder
Level 1 (Start)
"Open one. Close one."
Level 2 (Keep going)
"Try another jar."
Level 3 (Stretch)
"Did that one snap or twist?"
Level 4 (Extend)
"Can you find the tricky lid again?"

What you'd see
Focused
What to do
Say
"You found the one that fits."
Add
Name 1 feature, such as big lid or little lid.
Extend
Ask for 1 more jar before the round ends.

Make it easier

Younger end
  • -Use only larger jars your child can hold with both hands.
  • -Loosen twist lids a little before the round starts.
  • -Play one closure style at a time for a round, all snap-on or all twist-on.

Make it harder

Older end
  • +Take the lids off first and let your child match them back on.
  • +Use jars with closer sizes so your child has to compare the fit.
  • +Ask your child to close every jar before reopening any of them.

If it's not working

If you see
If child ignores it
Open 1 jar yourself, hand it over, and say, "Can you close this one?"
If you see
If child misuses it
Put only 2 jars on the tray for the next round so the match is easier to see.
If you see
If child gets frustrated
Hold the jar steady and let your child do the last press or twist.

Open And Close

Opening and closing everyday containers

This helps with everyday container jobs, using both hands for different parts of one task, and checking a fit before forcing it.

  • The tray gives your child one clear hand job with a visible finish every time.
  • One hand holds steady while the other hand twists, pulls, or presses.
  • A wrong fit becomes a quick retry instead of the end of the game.
Real-world transfer
  • Opening snack cups, small tubs, or simple storage containers.
  • Using one hand to hold steady while the other hand works.
  • Trying a different fit when the first one does not work.
