The recipe.

Low parent effort
5 things

What you need

  • Kitchen foil
  • A few familiar toys that are safe for your child to handle
  • Scissors for adult setup
  • Basket, optional
  • 2 trays, optional
10 min minimum

Setup

Then start the loop
Step 01
On a low table or clear floor spot, gather a few familiar toys that are safe for your child to handle and small enough to wrap one at a time.
Step 02
On the same surface, cut one piece of foil for each toy and wrap each toy loosely enough that a corner or edge is easy to find.
Step 03
In the center of the play area, put the wrapped toys in the basket. Place one tray on each side
one for opened toys and one for used foil.
"Open this one."
The loop

How play unfolds.

Four panels show toys wrapped in foil, a toddler peeling one open, the toy being revealed, and the toy and foil sorted on trays.
  1. 01
Pick up one wrapped toy, tug one foil edge open, and say, "Something is hiding in here. Can you help me open it?"
  2. 02
Let your child pull, peel, crinkle, or tear the foil until the toy appears.
  3. 03
Put the toy on one tray and the foil on the other tray.
  4. 04
Name what appeared or ask one quick guess about the next parcel.
  5. 05
Choose another wrapped toy, or let your child rewrap a favorite toy for another turn.

Safety Check

  • Scissors are for adult setup only.
  • Use toys that are safe for your child's age and do not pose a choking risk.
  • If your child is still mouthing materials, pause the foil version and wrap a toy in fabric, a scarf, or a sock instead.

What to say in the moment

Match what you say to what you see.

Prompt ladder
Level 1 (Start)
"Pick one shiny parcel."
Level 2 (Keep going)
"Pull that edge."
Level 3 (Stretch)
"What do you think is inside?"
Level 4 (Extend)
"Do you want to wrap it again for me?"
If your child seems...
What you'd see
Focused
What to do
Say
"You got the edge."
Add
Ask one quick guess before the next parcel.
Extend
Invite your child to rewrap one favorite toy for you to open.

Make it easier

Younger end
  • -Start each parcel with one foil flap already lifted.
  • -Use larger toys so the parcel is easier to hold.
  • -Let your child skip tray sorting until the opening rhythm is working.

Make it harder

Older end
  • +Wrap one toy a little tighter once your child can open loose parcels.
  • +Ask for a guess before opening each parcel.
  • +Have your child sort the toy first, then flatten the used foil on the other tray.

If it's not working

If you see
If child ignores it
Open the first parcel halfway and say, "I see something hiding."
If you see
If child misuses it
Offer one parcel at a time and keep extra foil out of reach.
If you see
If child gets frustrated
Start a tear, loosen the next wrapping, or hold the parcel steady while your child peels.

Two-Hand Coordination

Two-hand control

Two-hand control helps a child manage everyday jobs that need one hand to steady and the other hand to pull, open, or place.

  • Peeling foil gives both hands a shared job: one hand steadies while the other pulls.
  • The shiny parcel creates a clear reason to keep trying until the toy appears.
  • Sorting the toy and foil gives each turn a visible finish before the next parcel starts.
Real-world transfer
  • Pulling socks, sleeves, or tabs with two hands
  • Opening simple packages or containers with help nearby
  • Sorting play materials during cleanup
