Step 02
Leave one fabric corner or edge sticking out where your child can grab it easily.

Keep the extra fabrics nearby so you can restuff the box for another round.
"Pull it out."
The loop

How play unfolds.

Four panels showing a grown-up setting soft fabrics into a tissue box, leaving one corner out, a toddler pulling one fabric free, and the fabrics being stuffed back in for another round.
  1. 01
Pull one fabric partway out and say, "Pull it out."
  2. 02
Let your child grab the fabric and pull it free.
  3. 03
Give your child a moment to feel, wave, or bunch it, then point back to the box for the next pull.
  4. 04
When the fabrics are all out, stuff them back in and start again.

Safety Check

  • Use large fabric squares, not tiny scraps or narrow ribbons.
  • Stay close if your child mouths fabric, puts it over the face, wraps it around the neck, or throws the box.
  • If fabrics get wet from mouthing, swap in clean dry pieces before the next round.

What to do
Say
"Another one is hiding."
Add
Name one simple texture word such as soft or bumpy after the pull.
Extend
Invite your child to push one fabric back in before the next pull.

Make it easier

Younger end
  • -Use only two or three larger fabric squares at a time.
  • -Leave a long corner hanging out for the first pull.
  • -Hold the box steady on your child's stronger side.

Make it harder

Older end
  • +Tuck the fabrics a little deeper while still leaving a visible corner.
  • +Ask your child to put one fabric back in before pulling the next one out.
  • +Use fabrics that feel different enough for one simple texture choice.

If it's not working

If you see
If child ignores it
Wiggle one fabric edge out of the box, brush it across your hand, and show the first pull yourself.
If you see
If child misuses it
If your child dumps the whole box or throws it, restuff only two or three fabrics and leave one corner showing again.
If you see
If child gets frustrated
Pull the next fabric halfway out, hold the box steady, and count it as success when your child finishes the pull.

Fill And Empty

Emptying and refilling a simple container with control

This helps the child practice taking things out of a container, putting them back, and repeating a simple reset routine that shows up in cleanup, packing, and everyday helper play.

  • Pulling one soft piece from a small opening gives your child a clear reason to grip, pull, and adjust the hand.
  • The box creates a simple empty-and-refill routine that toddlers can understand without a lot of words.
  • Different textures make the same basic mechanic feel fresh without changing the activity.
Real-world transfer
  • Pulling clothes or washcloths out of a basket.
  • Putting soft items into bins or bags.
  • Repeating small cleanup and reset jobs.
