The recipe.

Low parent effort
3 things

What you need

  • 1 child coat
  • 1 child hat
  • 1 pair of child mittens
5 min minimum

Setup

Then start the loop
Step 01
On the floor or a low seat, put the coat, hat, and mittens together where your child can see all three items at once.
Step 02
A few steps away, clear one floor spot where the clothing row will go.
Step 03
Spread the start items just enough that your child can grab one without dragging the others along.
"Bring the coat."
The loop

How play unfolds.

Four panels showing a coat, hat, and mittens in one start pile, a toddler carrying each item over, and the finished clothing row.
  1. 01
Point to the clothing pile and say, "Bring the coat first."
  2. 02
Let your child carry one item to the target spot and help place it in the row.
  3. 03
Ask for the next item and repeat until the coat, hat, and mittens are lined up in order.
  4. 04
If an item drops or lands off the row, point to the target spot and restart that same turn.

Safety Check

  • Use only clothing items light enough for your child to carry without tripping.
  • Keep the path clear so your child is not stepping on sleeves or mittens during the carry.

What to say in the moment

Match what you say to what you see.

Prompt ladder
Level 1 (Start)

What you'd see
Focused
What to do
Say
"You got the next one."
Add
Name one clothing word after the child is already moving.
Extend
Pause before the next cue so your child can look at the row first.

Make it easier

Younger end
  • -Use only coat and hat for the active round.
  • -Keep the target spot right beside you.
  • -Point to the empty row space before each carry.

Make it harder

Older end
  • +Pause after each delivery and wait to see if your child spots the next missing item.
  • +Ask your child to place the mittens together at the end of the row.
  • +Move the target row onto a low chair seat instead of the floor.

If it's not working

If you see
If child ignores it
Hand over the first item, walk with your child to the target spot, and let the final placement be the win.
If you see
If child misuses it
Pull the extra items back to the start and restart with one visible item and one short cue.
If you see
If child gets frustrated
Use only two items for that round, move the target spot closer, and stop after the next success.

Carry And Place

bringing needed clothing items to one clear place in order

This helps a child join a real dressing routine by moving needed items to the right place, staying with a short sequence, and acting on one simple direction at a time.

  • This helps your child practice following one short direction with a real object in hand.
  • The repeatable coat-then-hat-then-mittens row makes the routine easier to see and remember.
  • Carrying one item at a time gives a small helping job with a clear finish.
Real-world transfer
  • Joining dressing time instead of only watching it happen
  • Carrying needed items for simple family routines
