What you need

  • 1 large sturdy cardboard box
  • 1 clear floor space
5 min minimum

Setup

Then start the loop
Step 01
On the floor, clear a space around the activity so your child can walk up to the box, climb in, and climb back out without bumping furniture.
Step 02
In the middle of that space, put one large open box on the floor with the opening facing up and the flattest side resting on the floor.
Step 03
Press on the bottom and both long sides. If the box bends, tips, or slides, switch to a sturdier box before your child starts.
"In the box."
The loop

How play unfolds.

Three-panel sequence showing a grown-up setting out a large box, a toddler climbing into it, and the toddler climbing back out for another turn
  1. 01
Tap the box and say, "In the box. Out again."
  2. 02
Let your child climb in, turn or settle for a moment, and climb back out.
  3. 03
Point back to the box for another turn and repeat.

Safety Check

  • Stay close enough to steady the box and help on the climb down.
  • Stop if the child starts jumping on the rim, crushing the sides, or turning the box into a crash toy.
  • Skip torn, slick, or overly tall boxes, and keep hard toys and furniture away from the landing area.

Make it easier

Younger end
  • -Use the lowest side of the box as the entry side.
  • -Keep the box close to you so one hand can steady it fast.
  • -Let your child climb in and sit before climbing back out.

Make it harder

Older end
  • +Wait for your child to turn inside the box before climbing out.
  • +Ask for two calm in-and-out turns before the break.
  • +Let your child carry one soft toy into the box and bring it back out.

If it's not working

If you see
If child ignores it
Sit beside the box, tap the rim, and place one toy inside for a single rescue turn.
If you see
If child misuses it
Hold the box still, stop the round, and restart with one slow in-and-out turn only.
If you see
If child gets frustrated
Steady the box, help with the first leg in or out, and count one calm entry or exit as the win.

Change Body Level

Climbing into and out of a low container with body control

This helps with body planning, balance, and using the whole body to manage a small height change during everyday climbing and movement.

  • Early. Your child may lean on you or the box rim before getting all the way in or out.
  • Later. Your child runs the same in-and-out loop several times and resets for another turn on their own.
  • Middle. Your child starts climbing in faster and needs less help to climb back out.
Real-world transfer
  • Climbing onto and off low household play surfaces.
  • Moving the body into and out of small spaces with more confidence.
  • Handling simple obstacle play that needs balance and whole-body planning.
